about

Based on a vast scientific archive of bird sounds collected by Boris Veprintsev (1928–1990), the debut album by Ural-born sonic artist Maria Karpovich is a distinct ecologically-engaged listening practice.

From the opening arrhythmic textures of 'Traces-' made in collaboration with the lynchpin of bio-acoustic electronic music Felicity Mangan, to the shimmering and blurry tones of 'Re-nature' made together with fellow sonic artists Olga Zubova and Leonid Kurashov, the sound Maria sculpting is truly remarkable and adventurous, expanding way beyond the simple formula of "making music from bird sounds". Welt around the fore-mentioned archive, Maria is piercing the surface level, bridging the gaps between the meticulous sound design and impressionist quasi-chaotic composition.

What we're dealing with is not only a breathtaking and surprising listening experience, but a comprehensive investigation into ecology and environmentalism in contemporary sound art. With the subtlety of the way Maria conducted her ecocritical listening experiment, it's easy to get oneself immersed into her endlessly evolving soundscapes. However it's still important to keep in mind that 'Qinnim Metamorphosis' is not a subject of easy listening. Same as nature around us, it demands focus and attention.

All music is composed with use of B.N. Veprintsev Phonotheka of Animal Voices of A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution.

Track 1 is featuring Felicity Mangan and track 7 featuring Olga Zubova and Leonid Kurashov.
